I live in Bedminster. Every day I leave my house for work and see commuters prowling my street for a parking space. I see the same people doing this every day. Our street is very narrow and as they sit waiting for a space these people block the road for other traffic leaving or entering the street. It's also not fair that these commuters cause most of the congestion and air pollution here in Bristol.

RPZ would hopefully stop this and encourage these people from outside Bristol to use the park and ride and other public transport services.

Reading the comments on this and other local websites it's apparent a lot of people can't imagine life without their cars.

I don't own a car and have no difficultly using my local shops in Bedminster/Southville and the shops further afield on the Gloucester Road. I walk, cycle and use the bus and never have a problem getting home with my shopping.

My partner and I don't have children but some friends of ours with a toddler recently got rid of their car. They've told me they haven't experienced any drop in their quality of life since they went car free - they can still do their shopping, they can still travel to work, they can still visit friends across the city. And if they need to travel outside of Bristol they hire a car.

Many commuters park in a way that obstructs residents. In areas of the city where people drive in and leave their cars all day, it prevents residents who live in those areas from taking their cars out. If they do, they can't get them home again. Furthermore, the issue causes circulating traffic, and very unsafe streets which are dangerous to cross, particularly for children. This leads to considerable levels of stress for everyone who has to live with it.

If you believe this is simply a money making exercise, perhaps you could visit Cliftonwood or Cotham North and ask residents there if they embrace the commuter parking issue, or if they would rather commuters chose an alternative to driving round their streets looking for a spare parking space.

Nobody is preventing people bringing their skills to the Bristol economy. The Mayor is simply asking commuters to find an alternative method of getting to work, and asking employers to take some of the responsibility of ensuring their staff have alternatives to the private car.

Many organisations and businesses already have excellent travel planning arrangements.
